Contrived still? Yes. Violent? Yes. Cruel to use a chapter-ending cliffhanger to end the book? YES.
BUT.
So, so good. SO good.
What else is there to say? There's the satisfaction of being one step ahead of the protagonist, the exasperation at the stupid things she does because you know (or are pretty sure you know) more than she does, the exhilaration of flouting the oppressive authority, the trepidation of just who might die next, AND the confusion over which boy she should choose (assuming one of them doesn't get killed off)!
Am I really still hungry after a big lunch or is my stomach tied in knots?

I love these reviews.
I loved reading all your reviews Dani! You always seem to articulate my thoughts and feelings so well! :) I loved Catching Fire the best - and just finished Mockingjay a few days ago. It really took me a full two days after finishing it to feel okay about it. I struggled with the whole revenge theme throughout it. I mean, I understand it, but it felt darker because of it. Does that make sense? And I felt that the ending was so rushed that it took me a couple days to come to terms with the "new" katniss. All in all, great series and Ryan and I had a ton of fun reading them together. Catching Fire still wins for me. :)
